Elders & Youth
“Everyone older than you is an Elder, and everyone younger than you is a Youth.”
-Wáahlaal Gidaag-
The Restoration of Balance project is deeply committed to fostering intergenerational relationships among Elders, Youth, and Ancestors, recognizing that exchanging knowledge between these groups is vital for cultural preservation and community resilience. Engaging both Elders and youth in meaningful ways will ensure that the wisdom of the past informs the lives of younger generations while cultivating respect, understanding, and continuity within our community.
To facilitate the engagement of Elders, we plan to organize dedicated gatherings where they can share their stories in a safe and supportive environment. These sessions will be rooted in respect for their knowledge and experiences, providing a platform for Elders to convey traditional teachings passed down through generations. With the Elders’ consent, we will record these oral histories, creating a valuable archive that will preserve their voices for future generations and serve as an educational resource for the community.
Involving Alaska Native youth is paramount to our approach. We will invite young people to participate in these gatherings, providing them with the opportunity to learn directly from the Elders. By asking thoughtful questions and engaging in dialogue about memories, cultural practices, and traditional spiritual arts, the youth will gain insights into their heritage and the significance of the teachings shared with them. This hands-on learning experience will help bridge the generational gap, enabling the youth to appreciate the cultural nuances and historical context of our ancestors' lived experiences.
Moreover, we will incorporate activities that reflect traditional ways of knowing and being. For instance, conversations on plant medicine and spiritual practices will allow youth to engage directly with the knowledge holders. Through guided sessions, Elders will teach youth about the uses and purposes of various plants, emphasizing sustainable practices and the cultural significance behind these teachings. This knowledge transfer is essential, as it empowers the youth with practical skills and strengthens their connection to their heritage and environment.
Ultimately, the Restoration of Balance project aspires to create a vibrant, interwoven community of Elders and youth united through shared stories, art, culture, teachings, and experiences. By recognizing and valuing the contributions of Elders and youth, we will cultivate a sense of belonging and identity that honors our ancestors while paving the way for an artistic and culturally rich future. This holistic approach to intergenerational knowledge sharing will be instrumental in empowering our youth, preserving our cultural heritage, and nurturing the spiritual, artistic, and communal ties that bind us.
